Solaris doesn't include gnutar by default, only tar. Unfortunately the
supported features of the two are not the same, namely gnutar will
also gunzip, but tar won't. So just adding an alias won't do the trick.
Your best bet is to look for gnutar on http://www.sunfreeware.com/ and
install it.

Hello:
I’m attempting to install the WebObjects Update 5.2.4 on SOLARIS. I
installed tar-1.21-sol8-sparc-local.gz, which is the GNU version of
tar and it is installed in /usr/local. What is being installed are
tar directories. I downloaded patcher.sh and WO524Solaris.tar.tar
and placed them in the /tmp directory on the Sun server. When I run
the command:
sh patcher.sh – install WO524.tar (the file name is shortened
when I copy it to the server),
I get the error: "*** ERROR *** gnutar not in path". Does anyone
know how to get around this? Is there another installer that can be
used?
