This is true; typically encrypting data on-disk only helps if the disk gets stolen. Locking the allen key on the front of the Xserve which is itself locked in a rack which is itself locked in a server room which is itself locked in a building has, so far, stopped that from happening to me :-). However while the customer may not know what they're talking about, giving them encrypted data allows them to fell smug and tick the box against your name. OTOH patiently explaining why they're wrong may lead to loss of a sale...
