Are there any available alternatives to using JavaMonitor?

I recently was quite frustrated with a problem where JavaMonitor simply
wouldn't launch my application or give any output, while the application
would run fine from the command line. I don't like being held hostage by an
application that sometimes decides not to work. In this case restarting the
server made it work.

Is there something else besides JavaMonitor that can be used to manage or at
least just launch applications?

How can you run an app from the command line and have it appear like an app
that was started by JavaMonitor (i.e., no "~port" at the end of the URL).
