I think that this comment is from the times when there was a performance hit when this feature was used and when it was fairly new. When you turn on "coalesceAutolocking" performance shouldn't be an issue (it wasn't before for me either).
You might want to use the new "catch all" setting for autolocking that combines a useful combination for this:
er.extensions.ERXEC.safeLocking=true
What are the gotchas when setting it to automatically lock & unlock? Performance? It seems to be working like a charm.
