Hi LON,
thanks for responding to my request.
Now I found the following information about my question regarding
mixed deployment, in an old WO document from 2002:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Deploying WebObjects 4.5.1 and WebObjects 5 Applications
If you want to deploy WebObjects 4.5.1 and WebObjects 5 or WebObjects
5.1applications on the same computer, you must
■ install WebObjects 4.5.1 Deployment and either WebObjects 5 or
WebObjects 5.1Deployment on the computer
■ use either the WebObjects 5, or 5.1 versions of Monitor and wotaskd
Note that you cannot use the 4.5.1 version of wotaskd together with
the 5 or 5.1version of Monitor. Furthermore, you cannot deploy 4.5.1,
5, and 5.1 applications onthe same computer.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
.. so the last sentence says: "no mixed deployment is possible" ;(
We still have deployed some of our WO apps, based on WO 4.5.1 on
several OS platforms, like SUN OS, Windows 2003 Server and Mac OS X
10.3.9 (Panther). And they still do a good and stable job there. My
main problem isn't the mixed deployment, but that we found no way to
connect to our 4.5.1 apps through the WODefaultAdaptor, on Mac OS X
versions higher than 10.3.9 (Panther). So we have this Mac Xserve
based apps on really old OS, with no ongoing support. The only way for
us is to deploy this on Windows and SUN OS, but not on current modern
Mac OS X 10.5.x/10.6 and coming Mac OS. As far as I see is the problem
here the WODefaultAdaptor and/or wotaskd are using an unavailable
service or the configuration or naming etc. has changend somewhere
after Panther. ;(

Hey Hewart,
Yes, we are the ONE shop in the world with 4.01 apps still deployed
(and developed). :P However, we do not do mixed deployment and
don't use 4.5.x at all. We currently deploy on Solaris and develop
on Windows (for 4.0.1 apps). (We also have some 5.4.3 apps deployed
on Linux)
Sorry I wasn't any help!

Hi LON,
... in a chat with Pascal Robert I just had, he was so friendly to
let me know that he thinks you have some deployed WO 4.0.1 apps. So
I would like to ask you if you have experience wit deployment of
4.x.x apps on current Mac OS versions: from Tiger, Leopard till now
SnowLeopard ? And if yes, did you ever try a mixed deployment with
Java based WO 5.x versions ?
My question comes from the info I found in the JavaMonitor.woa in
the "Help/Deployment FAQ" - which states:
Q: Can I use 4.5.x and 5.x on the same machine?
A: The only supported mixed deployment is 4.5.1 Deployment + 5.x
Deployment. No mixed developments are supported. In addition, in a
mixed 4.5.1/5.x deployment, only the 5.x tools (wotaskd and Monitor)
should be used.
---------
I got them run both (4.5.1 and 5.3.4) in parallel on my Leopard
10.5.8 MacBookPro, the 5.3.4 in correct Monitor/Apache environment
through Standard WOAdaptor, but unfortunately my 4.5.1 apps only
through the embedded socket addresses localhost:<port>.
.. so did you ever hear something about such kind of mixed
deployment of 4.5.1 and 5.4.3 on the same machine ?
Best Regards from Berlin,
Herwart
