Off topic but I thought readers here would find this interesting. Old news for some of you, perhaps, but only now brought to my attention:
http://shootout.alioth.debian.org/ It takes a bunch of implementations of algorithms in a bunch of languages and it sees how fast they run on 4 architectures (AMD/Intel, 32/64bit) This graph shows that (for the implentations tested) C/C++ is fastest, Java is a worthy second, Haskell a close third and Python and Ruby bringing up the rear.
