And so are most viruses and worms (I can cite a great OS that established HLL programming, better than Unix, not written in C). C gets its speed due to lack of checks, buffer overflows, etc. Widespread and used a lot also does not equate to good. Other systems languages were around in the 60s that were far better than C, that could have established good programming practices. C has been a disaster on so many levels.
