A client making suggestions about a deployment config is like airline passengers making suggestions about jet engine design…
I don't think a JDK is required, but I would use it anyway. I don't think you get tools like jvisualvm with JRE. The first time the app falls over with an OutOfMemoryException, you're going to regret having a JRE.
