The comment from one of my commits to a HttpClient utils class: "Seriously, they default to US-ASCII on requests and ISO-8859-1 on responses? WTH man? Response should have a charset anyway, but explicitly setting UTF-8 just in case."
It's better than URLConnection, yes. Just don't assume the defaults make any sense.
