I usually prefetch to save myself the pain of faulting on list pages.  
Something like

100 : pageConfiguration = 'QueryERCMailMessage' => 
prefetchingRelationshipKeyPaths = ("mailRecipients", 
"mailRecipients.mailAddress", "fromAddress", "replyToAddress") 
[com.webobjects.directtoweb.Assignment]
