Exactly, you only need to provide different sizes if you're not happy
with the quality of the scaled image that silverstripe creates. (But
in that case, please guide me to the image).

So just upload the original size, and when a different size should be
inserted into the page, use the width and height settings in the
right-hand image-insertion control within the CMS, this will create a
resized copy automatically.

Adding overlay/slideshow is one of the next items on my toDo - I'm in
favor of using colorbox for this, but if people have strong opinions
about it, I would consider alternatives (but please state why your
preferred solution should be preferred over colorbox)

Reasons why I like colorbox: Small size, straightforward to use,
keyboard navigation support without any fiddling around. And probably
the most important wrt use in a CMS system:
Behavior settings can be over-written without altering the ColorBox
javascript file.

(jquery based solutions are preferred)
