I might not understand the full effects correctly, but if it is just a
1:1 mapping of the letters, and not a translation in itself, it might
be rather easy to solve.

How that is worked out in detail - I'm not sure - it would fit
silverstripe's model more if this was a suffix

Sure - silverstripe is open source, and it's quite easy to extend.

I'm wondering whether it is preferable to hook up a auto-"translation"
hook (this would work if one language is always the master language,
and the other one is always generated, otherwise there would be all
kind of conflict resolution needed) or whether to generate it
on-the-fly.

So what is the workflow? Are both edited independently?

No, copy and paste of the html-source is all there is currently.
Besides there is risk of copyright stuff when you blindly copy stuff,
so please double check.

I'd rather not do that for the above reasons.

email) are not really used - it is just that the forum module used for
user-registration/management offers those...
