Sounds like quite some unnecessary load and wasted time to me.

Do you know if this issue is already addressed at HtmlUnit?
it isn't and in fact there isn't even an issue opened for it.
I've discovered it by a client and he was happy with the workaround that
consist in explicitly setting the request header. As a consequence he
was not motivated to provide a patch or to let me do it while I was
working for him.
If you're motivated to provide a patch, it is welcome ;-)
