It's not a real show-stopper to me. Still, I think, it's a basic issue worth 
improvement at HtmlUnit. Hence I opened a ticket there:

I know, I moan a lot and don't ever provide a patch myself - my excuse: I just 
don't have the background :(
WebTest is still a cool and valuable tool!

it isn't and in fact there isn't even an issue opened for it.
I've discovered it by a client and he was happy with the workaround that 
consist in explicitly setting the request header. As a consequence he 
was not motivated to provide a patch or to let me do it while I was 
working for him.

If you're motivated to provide a patch, it is welcome ;-)
