If it doesn't, a WebKit instance per-user does not sound appealing.

Instance-per-user is not a problem unless you want to host 50+ users on
one box. But dedicated servers are cheap enough that you shouldn't need
to put more than 10 webware users (max) on a box anyway.

I can't say this from direct experience, but I don't really see any reason 50 users would be a problem. Well, it may be a management problem, but that's a separate issue -- resolvable, but Webware doesn't provide great tools for managing so many processes.

Simply in terms of processes, 50 processes isn't a big deal. One of our production servers has 333 processes running on it currently, most of them Apache processes (one server per client).

My only concern would be memory consumption. I'd be curious what kind of memory use different people see on their sites. One Webware server does take up more memory than one Apache process (though the cumulative memory of the entire Apache server may be more). At least... I think so. There's a bunch of different numbers, and I don't really know which ones to pay attention to. Anyway, while 50 instances might be pushing the envelope, on a dedicated box it doesn't seem unreasonable. Depending on the applications and the load on the application of course.

Mostly, I think Webware would scale decently alongside other products. 50 Apache servers seems like a lot... but I'd think you'd need that to use mod_python securely (or would you? I don't know for sure). PHP to its credit has more isolation, though less than ideal security (since everyone runs as the same user). CGI has a benefit in that unneeded processes are cleaned up, so you only get as many concurrent processes as is necessary at that moment. But then needed processes are cleaned up too, so it scales in its own weird way.

And separate instances give built-in clustering potential ;) Anyway, it's only to say that I think separate instances are a good compromise. My experience running multiple clients off a single Zope instance has not enamored me to that option at all.
