That's interesting - I've never had that, just the weewx crash. My station is a WEA22 from Weathereye, which I believe is a W1080 type, so it looks like it's down to chance.
The station has been in operation for about 3 years and has performed OK - even surviving a mauling by a herd of Sanglier (that sort of thing happens around here).
