Eventually I found that one of the USB sockets on my laptop is a duff one! 
Plugged the station into another one and this is result:-

It was your "I gather it is plugged in?"  
that made me double check (after muttering to myself "of course it's 
b........ plugged in", definitely the port as my USB mouse won't work on 
that one and have tried a different usb cable - not the cable. I'll have a 
firkle with socket connections if and when I have the inclination, meantime 
have plugged in an adapter to remind me not to use that socket.
Sorry not to have twigged before ;(
