Doug, the biggest incompatibility problem is actually between loggers. Sometime in 2012, Davis changed the interface to the logger. Modern consoles will not work with old loggers. The console looks for a key in the logger and, if it doesn't find it, refuses to boot. This was to prevent 3rd party loggers although, human nature being what it is, smart people have found ways around the lock.
New loggers will work with any console.
