An alleged smuggler has been caught after trying to
transfer over 200 litres of alcohol via a one-kilometre-
long underground pipeline from Russia to neighbouring
Latvia. A spokesman for the Latvian border police said
it was the first time they had come across such a method
for smuggling alcohol. He added they were stunned
when they stumbled across the pipe and found it
contained 200 litres of alcohol. One half of the pipe was
laid in Russia while the other stretched to a small village
over the Latvian border. The smuggler, who has not
been named, was arrested and faces contraband charges
A Russian man suffering from high blood pressure died
after medics were blocked from reaching him by his guard
dog. The incident took place in the Ural Mountains city
of Chelyabinsk, where an emergency medical crew tried
to treat the 54-year-old man. "All attempts by the medics
to get close to the dying man were firmly blocked by his
four-legged friend," reported the ITAR-Tass news agency.
Police were called to the scene and shot the dog, but
the owner died before he could be attended to by doctors.
An American woman who stands accused of stabbing
a drinking companion has blamed the attack on the
ghost of the man's ex-wife. Jean Lampron, 46, has been
charged with aggravated assault, reckless conduct with
a dangerous weapon and obstructing the report of a crime.
It's alleged she stabbed Paul Vicnaire several times
after drinking whiskey with him at his home in Hartland.
Vicnaire told police Lampron stabbed him under orders
from his dead ex-wife. Lampron, however, told police that
Vicnaire's ex-wife, who was glowing and dressed "in a
beautiful white robe," stabbed him.
