Hello Allan.
I wonder if you could help a local lad with a project he been doing for
some time now, He needs some blanks filled in...Could you or groups you
belong to help out?
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Any reply's please: To Dave Towers
a.. [email protected]
John, do you think some of your knowledgeable mates might be able to help
me with my "end of conductors" exercise as shown below? I don't know if
this will come across alright; I tried to do an attachment but some of
these computer procedure...es are a bit beyond me!
CREW OPERATION IN WALES - WHEN WERE THE LAST CONDUCTORS PHASED OUT?
Can any local readers advise me when 100% o-p-o was achieved for the
following fleets?
Aberconwy In 1964 this fleet consisted of about 10 single deck vehicles
between 20 and 35 seats so may well have been
fully o-p-o by then
Aberdare Double deck operation ceased in December 1972. Was this also the
end of crew operation?
Cardiff Crew operation finished in April 1980, although I don't have an
exact date
Colwyn Bay In the mid 1960s this fleet consisted on just four 21 seat
Bedfords, so one would suspect had been fully o-p-o
for some considerable time
Islwyn Crew operation reported finished October 1980, again, exact date
unknown
Methyr Tydfil The last double deckers were withdrawn 31/08/77; was this
also the end of crew operation?
Newport It was reported that a new delivery of Metropolitans was awaited
in 1974, which would provide enough
vehicles to convert to total o-p-o. BUSES magazine for March 1975 advised
that these vehicles were
being delivered during January 1975. Perhaps the last conductors finished
January/February 1975?
Rhymney Valley I have seen a photograph of a PD3 in service in February
1981 which was reported withdrawn a few months
later. BUSES reported the last PD3 was sold to Stevenson's in Oct '82, but
it could have been out of service for
a while
Taff Ely It is well documented that some of the Regent fleet survived into
1984. Most photos I have seen
though of these show them being employed on school duties only. I wonder
if they had been withdrawn
from 'regular' service some time previously and that the second men on
these buses would be spare drivers
acting as 'attendants' rather than true conductors? I have read of a PD3
arriving from Rhymney Valley to cover
but was this just to cover school routes?
National Welsh In 1980 a fleet list was printed in BUSES, showing 10 half
cabs still in stock, being one Lodekka, 2 Renowns and
7 PDs; the last of these ten (a Renown) was withdrawn later in 1980
South Wales Another NBC company. Some Regents were retained to operate
route 14 to Pennard which had to navigate
a very tight corner en-route. The Regents were delicensed at the end of
February 1982; did their crews
finish with them?- Hide quoted text -
