Follow-up Comment #1, bug #10770 (project wesnoth):

It is not a typo in the scenario file.
It seems to happen when a [recall] causes a unit to spawn off the edge of the
map.

As you know, recalls spawn in this pattern:

  1
6    2
  *
5    3
  4

If one of these is off the map and and a unit spawns there, the game dies.

It seems the logic to detect this case and skip those hexes is currently
broken.
