Follow-up Comment #1, bug #12715 (project wesnoth):

Actually, upon getting this working with the workaround mentioned, I am
convinced that changing the current turn *does* serve a purpose even when
there is no turn limit. Specifically, changing the current turn changes the
current time_of_day, which can have a huge impact on the game. This is even
more important for campaigns utilizing a 24-hour time schedule.
