Follow-up Comment #7, bug #15096 (project wesnoth):

It has reacted differently to everything I've tried it with.

Summary:
When used on overlays horizontal works, but the height is locked.

Halo exhibits the same behavior as overlays, but also casues the game to
crash after the scaling is applied.

Using the [effect] tag "apply_to=image_mod" works perfectly. Both width and
height will shrink and stretch, and the image is recentered after scaling.

Embedding an image in a message also works perfectly with scale. It scales
properly in both directions and it is recentered after scaling.

When used on an [item] the image is scaled properly in both directions, but
it doesn't get recentered. So when you shrink it, it gets pushed up and to
the left. When you enlarge it, it grows down and to the right.

When applied to a [set_menu_item]'s icon image, it works perfectly. The image
is scaled in both directions and recentered.

When you use ~SCALE on a [story][part]'s background image the image is scaled
down (or up) but then it get's restreched and centered to fit the user's
screen. So it defeats it's own purpose. Scaling the image up or down in this
case only pixelates it, it doesn't actually change the size.

Are there any other ways to display images in wesnoth? I can't think of
anything else to test. Or do you have enough information?
