Follow-up Comment #6, bug #15676 (project wesnoth): It actually looks like it is an image format issue.. those images are JPG, others which are shown are PNG.
Ok, it looks like I hit on the bug http://bugs.gentoo.org/305403 - "media-libs/sdl-image-1.2.10 fails to open jpg images w/ media-libs/jpeg-8". So this is not issue with Wesnoth itself. This can be closed then.
