It surely would be a compromise, but I'm not sure it's the ideal way
to go.

If I am not mistaken, the main reason to enable uploads by default was
most people not caring about it, right? So, for those people, it would
just mean more effort on decisions, probably the effort of reading
something about sending data, ignoring the rest, and deciding for what
they have been told by media, that is not giving their data away.
Or maybe they wouldn't read it at all and just take the default option.

So, for those people I don't really know. If it doesn't actually matter
for them, I don't see why any moral aspects would apply here. It would
just be a waste of their time to have them make a decision and they
can't really complain if you make a decision for them in that case -
as long as that decision doesn't harm them in some way, of course.

Then again, there are those people who do care. Maybe they have a reason
not to send data over the net, maybe they just dislike it, maybe they
want to help Wesnoth. So, assuming they actually care, they will read
the message carefully and they will make a decision. Still, if they
really do care about it, you would expect them to actively look into it.
Some might care about their data not being sent, but they expect any
program not to do that without them saying so. Some might care about
helping Wesnoth, but they don't expect to actually having to say so.
I'm not sure if any side wins here.

Also, there are people inbetween. People like me and probably the
author of that thread. I care about helping Wesnoth, but I don't
care enough to actually open that envelope and click the check box
everytime I install it. It would be easier for those people if they
would simply be asked automatically and if they could make their answer
permament at the same time - But it would be more work for those who
don't care at all.

After all, it seems like there is no optimal solution to this. There
is always a type of user who isn't treated perfectly. So it will have
to work in a way with that most of Wesnoth's users can be happy.
