Hi Caleb, Anguzu etc,

Just wondering whether the document of MASU spells out what the "Arua" in M.A.S.U represents and maybe availing the document to all to appreciate what really MASU is for and what it does.

A great Holy week and enjoy the Easter season.

Hi Sam, Okuni,

To an extent I agree with Caleb in that if we leave MASU as is, then you Sam and the Calebs are not going to have your siblings or even children subscribe to this - you will even find it difficult to call your self an ancestor yet you belong to "Matego" district and probably have an association of your district as MMSU or something like that. Arua district now is a smaller thing (The politicians have messed it up for their own gains and we can't do much about that now, however we can work from what we have and still stay together and guide the younger generation together because we know we are one - regardless of those lines they draw across rivers called borders to separate us. The younger generation might not understand this because ever since they started to understand issues they have found themselves coming from, Koboko District, Yumbe District, Matego District, and who knows soon Madi Okollo District and not the original Arua, the one we the older generation belong to.

However Caleb I also think the Lugbara name might alienate some ethnic groups like Madi (as Okuni said I am a Madi too).

We therefore need to review these issues and come up with an association that takes care of the bigger old Arua regardless of tribes.

Thanks.

Rogers Anguzu

Hi Caleb,
Thank you for responding to my views especially on the changing of the name of Makerere Arua Students Union (MASU) to Lugbara Makerere Students Association. We have expressed our views. Patrick Okuni has expressed his in favor of retaining the name of MASU. Let others also express theirs and we can filter through the views to guide our brothers and sisters at Makerere. I genuinely respect all the views expressed even when i may disagree with others. It is through such diversity of opinions that we can see things from a better perspective.
Thank you
Sam Andema

Hi, Sam Andema,
Thanks for your view which although diametrically opposed to mine, shows the level of our  intellectual maturity. You know MASU depicted Makerere Arua Students Union, historical cultural identity or not, Arua is a district initially comprising of Ayivu, Maracha, Vura, Madi Okollo, Koboko, Yumbe and Terego. Now lets face this Koboko is not in Arua, Yumbe is not in Arua and Maracha Terego are not in Arua. Which Arua are we talking about. The Arua not of the old but a narrow Arua shriveled by bad politics which has imploded and has only Vura, Ayivu and Madi Okollo. Lets be realistic. Sam, me and you and Nkanga and others wish that we have MASU. But the young generation will look at a name Arua and just as people from Koboko and Yumbe have done, they will imagine they are now hailing from another district and they will be correct as they will not be hailing from Arua. Think about it and get back to us.  However the truth will be that they are all Lubgara's whether from Yumbe, Ayivu, Terego, Maracha, Madi Okollo or Vura. As for cosmopolitanism. Its in each town but it does not deprive the fact that Kampala is in Buganda.
