May the best candidate win! It is fully understandable that many people including international organizations are dismayed by the recent decision of the Kenyan government to forcefully repatriate a UNHCR recognized and registered South Sudanese refugee back to his country without any guarantees of his safety back in South Sudan. For those who have followed actions of various Kenya governments over the decades, this recent deportation of a refugee to his country of origin should come as no surprise. It is a consistent pattern that the Kenyan authorities have followed over the years. Below are some examples: 1. Kenya maintains relations with the South Africa Apartheid Regime During South Africa's apartheid regime cordial relations with Kenya were maintained, as Kenya was one of Africa's leading pro-Western governments. These relations weren't publicised and didn't go beyond trade until 1990. In November 1990 South Africa's minister of foreign affairs, Pik Botha, visited Kenya in the first publicised ministerial-level contact between the two countries since 1960. Relations were further consolidated when President de Klerk visited Kenya in June 1991, and Kenyan president Daniel Arap Moi visited Cape Town in June 1992 the first visit to South Africa by an African head of state. 2. Kenya Helps in Israel Raid of Entebbe in 1976 3. Kenyan Police and military agents kidnap and send back Rwandan refugee A Rwandese investigator into the 1994 genocide was kidnapped in Nairobi and sent back to Kigali by Kenyan police and military agents, alleged the man’s family. http://www.the-star.co.ke/news/2015/07/08/rwandese-snatched-and-sent-back-home_c1165188https://books.google.ca/books?id=I_9zjxi1o8MC&pg=PA44&lpg=PA44&dq=uganda+refugee+snatched+and+sent+back+to+uganda&source=bl&ots=4hMhwIQ8-9&sig=zw8LjS7oiVDsvzRIZEVRyMRxL5o&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjF-ICa15bQAhVr54MKHV1RCBEQ6AEIRjAI#v=onepage&q=uganda%20refugee%20snatched%20and%20sent%20back%20to%20uganda&f=false Many Ugandan refugees who were in Kenya during the 1980s and 90s had to be resettled to Europe and North America for fear of being arrested and returned to Uganda at that time. __________________________________ On Sun, Nov 6, 2016 at 6:11 PM, Margaret Akulia <akul...@gmail.com> wrote:
