Just an FYI since wget exposes this bug, you may see more questions about
it. The solution to my problem was
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=186592

Specically, removing "nisplus" from the "host" line in /etc/nsswitch.conf
resolved the problem.
