I too wanted to solve this problem. As Jim mention, what happen if internet
connection is down? One of the solution I can think of is to set up a GSM modem
(through GSM network) and send it out in sms but this incurs some programming.
Has anyone ever try this before?

I did some checking around in our environment. Here's the deal... It DOES
work, but on a limited basis. Anyone who goes through the internal
(employee) phone plan or has a family member whose employee plan your number
is on, the notifications will work. Any normal outside phone, our network
won't allow it. I had a technical answer but it's pretty complicated and
would take a long time to explain. So, long story short, only those who
have an employee phone plan are allowed to send SMS notifications through
WUG to their phones. However since we are the 6th largest wireless service
provider worldwide, obviously our phones are used by tons of people. WUG
seems pretty popular, and SMS notifications are really useful. I'm going to
talk to some people here and see if we can loosen the belt on outside phones
and the permissions level in our backend.

yes, for instance, what if our internet connection is down? how can the
email get out to notify us of the problem?
I sent this same question to voicestream support and the response i got back
gave me an 800 number that when called a modem answers. I cannot seem to
get an sms message to be sent from it, though. I suppose i need to know
what protocol it uses (tap, sms-tap, ntt or ucp-sms) and connection info,
baud rate, data bits, stop bits and parity (8N1 or 7N1).
