There is no way to disable the tabs. The issue of usage of screen real estate changing from v6.0x to v7.0 is something that I logged about a week or so ago. As I understand it, with a large number of maps (60 or so) tiled, one can only see the status icons for the left-hand column. Previously it was possible to see all 60 status icons. The only work-around I can suggest is to try working at higher resolution. Or using an additional monitor and stretching the display across both monitors.
