Hi all, 21 years ago a Ukrainian teenager who lived in Japan created [[uk:Атом]], Ukrainian Wikipedia’s first article. Today we have 1,36 million articles – and counting.
Thousands of volunteers have dedicated themselves to building out Ukrainian Wikipedia, often in difficult circumstances – when the Ukrainian language wasn’t in the mainstream in much of the country in the 2000s, and during Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine since 2022. Have a look at who creates Ukrainian Wikipedia by reading interviews with Vira Motorko, 2024 Functionary of the Year [1], or Oleh Shostak, UkWiki’s most prolific editor [2]. Or watch a video spotlighting Ukrainian volunteers (in Ukrainian with English subtitles) [3]. And, as usual, we’ll be celebrating by doing what we know best – creating Wikipedia articles. Wikimedia Ukraine’s annual Wikimarathon will bring hundreds of volunteers online and across dozens of cities in Ukraine & abroad.
