Greetings everyone! Following up on the April update <https://lists.wikimedia.org/hyperkitty/list/[email protected]/thread/AYILLCY2SZMIOS4MSYXKQHSWU2JAGFYR/> from the Code Ownership Working Group on Service Ownership, we wanted to share some progress.
Over the past several months, we've worked through the Wikimedia production environment to document services and identify the WMF teams responsible for some of them. That work is now reflected in the *Service Catalog* <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Production/Service_Catalog> page: it has been updated with team ownership for the services we've assessed so far and incorporates most of the information found on the mw:Developers/Maintainers <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Wikimedia_Production/Service_Catalog&oldid=8606967> and mw:Upstream_projects <https://www.mediawiki.org/w/index.php?title=Upstream_projects&oldid=8543190> pages. We have published this Service Catalog by updating the mw:Developers/Maintainers page and renaming it to Wikimedia_Production/Service_Catalog. This ensures we have exactly one copy of the ownership information and everyone is operating off the same information. A couple of things worth being clear about: This is a work in progress, not a finished inventory. Some services now have a clearly assigned owning team; many others are still being worked through and this will take time. As we said in April, we expect to narrow the set of unowned services gradually, prioritized by risk — not all at once. That said, we have already found owners for 6 critical/high-risk previously unowned services and a few more are expected to be owned in the coming weeks. The process is now in place; the coverage will keep growing. What's changed is that there's now a repeatable way to assign and record team ownership, and that ownership reflects an ongoing commitment for a service’s entire lifecycle, even in the event of reorganization and other changes. If you maintain or contribute to a service and don't see it reflected accurately on the Service Catalog page – or don't see it listed at all – please reach out on the Talk page <https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_Production/Service_Catalog> so we can correct or add it.
