Some HDs have both the standard molex & a place for this new power connector. My WD 74g Raptors do but there is a warning on the drive not to hook up both power connectors to the drive. Many other SATA drives only have a place for the new connector.
In my opinion, if they put a molex connector on a SATA hard drive it is ok to hook to it. For those SATA hard drives that do no have molex connectors, why don't they? If they did not put the molex connector on the drive but used a SATA connector for power, why? You have lots more experience than I and choose to trust adapters. Until I am given good reasons as to why SATA hard drives have their own power connector, I will refrain from hooking an adapter to one. I will stick with a power supply equipped for SATA hard drives.
