My PC has a "D" drive for ZIP discs. It works fine with 100MB discs, but
when I insert a 250MB disc, I get the message to 'please insert disc'. Does that
mean that my system will only accept 100MB discs?

The MB capacity is in raised small vertical lettering on the front of the drive to the right of the word, zip. If it is 100, that is all it will read. If it is 250 it will read both 100 and 250.
