If you are getting Adsl (not Sdsl), then unless you are paying for TWO phone lines from the telco, you will need a filter. For Adsl, the voice and dsl signals are combined and sent/received between the telco and the demarc (the outside box) on one physical circuit. From there, the dsl signal has to be filtered out of the signal for the "voice" devices (phone, fax, etc), or you will hear a hissing sound on them (that's the dsl signal).

When you say "modem will not share the line with anything else", do you mean it will not share the telephone *number* with anything else? If the adsl is delivered to the demarc on the same telephone number as voice, then you will need a "whole house" filter on the voice side at the demarc (preferred), or you can use separate filters at each device.

Separate line run from the outside box to the phone plug into which I will be plugging the DSL modem (gateway.) As the modem will not share the line with anything else, do I have to put a filter at the outside box? Several web pages I have read seem to indicate no filter will be necessary as the only place the voice line meets the DSL line (from the modem) is at the outside box.
