Thanks for the tip. I downloaded and installed ffdshow. I was hesitant to 
remove all other codecs and was pleased when the avi files I had problems with 
now play correctly in windows media player. I have still not figured out how to 
get SageTV to play them correctly. Well, I can select ffdshow as the default 
decoder and the program works for the avi files, but the program shuts down 
with the mpeg files it creates itself. With SageTV I can use a remote. Not so 
with Windows Media Player. But, it is a small price to pay. When I have 
additional time, I may delve deeper into the codecs used by the different 
programs, but for now, I have a working system. Again, thanks so much for the 
tip.
