It's actually for my daughter's PC, we think she spends too much time on
the thing and as we can't always be watching over it, this type of timer
might be an answer.
Some home routers have parental controls that allow you to specify the
hours that each computer on the network has Internet access.
Seems a lot more graceful than forcing a shutdown with unsaved data.
