Remmember a few weeks back that the main reason Microsoft decided to launch its
own MSN search desktop tool
was becuase Google had released its own desktop search tool a few months back.
Microsoft claims that its very hard for users to find files and information not
only on the net but on the PC desktop itself.
The reality is Microsoft is competing with Google for the Desktop Search Engine
Wars because IE is getting kicked around by FireFox so they added tabbed
browsing in their next incarnation of an IE patch. But why didn't Microsoft
just copy Firefoxe's implementation of tabbed browsing is completly beyond me.
Besides isn't this what Microsoft always did with a competitor's technology
give it away for free and millions of people use it all over the world just
like they did with Netscape when they released their first Internet Explorer
3.0 back in the early 90's?
Yes searching for files on your PC is a real nightmare but it doesn't have to
be that way I usually store all of my downloaded files in one place C:\My
Documents And Settings\Downloads and my personal documents in C:\My Documents
and Settings\ which is encrypted for security's sake of course ;). This way I
wont have to hunt down that file that I've would have to find bacuse I'll
always know exactly where it is.
The MSN Desktop search bar is there for people who still have no idea of where
they place their files and how to search for them. Microsoft claims that this
serach tool will make it easier (which can be debated in itself) but I think
not becuase it only adds another layer on top of both IE and Windows XP which
they in fact both have built-in search tools already there in place.

I suspect this isn't news to most of you, but this is the most concrete
mention of it I've seen:
>
> WebProNews - MSN Toolbar 1.2 Releases With Tabbed Browsing

> MSN released tonight version 1.2 of its search toolbar, which
> brings tabbed browsing to all compatible versions of IE well ahead

I note two things:
1) I don't use/want a 'search toolbar' [and still don't understand why
folk do], and
2) the 'rudimentary' makes it not so attractive: a browser like
Maxthon has a pretty well-done tab setup [and indeed, having now used
it for some time now, I can't *survive* with an untabbed browser any
more!]
