Create a connectoid for each of them.

But I don't have any connectoids at all on my laptop: just a wireless
connection. ON my laptop, I have separate connectoids for each, of
course, but none mess with DNS [they just do the "let the server assign
it"] and that works just fine...

How does ICS do anything useful at all if it doesn't handle passing-
through DNS? Something else must be messed up but I can't quite figure
out what....

ICS should pass through the DNS, you need to have it setup as automatic on your connectoid on your laptop. It's been quite awhile since I've had to use that but I don't remember any DNS problems. How is your network setup? You said the laptop is wireless, how is this connecting, wireless router or access point? How is the desktop connected?
