I'm still afraid that most 98 machines wouldn't be able to run BartPE & Screenhunter with at least 128meg required to boot. Then many 98 machines couldn't boot from a cdrom drive & barely run USB never mind boot from those devices. Mr. Glazier & I have discussed this ad infinitum.

No offence to Wayne, but I build basic no-frills BartPE CDs that are REALLY
meant for low-end machines... (OR, think of it as a "one size fits all"...)
I "think" I can go as low as 32M ram... This is obviously extremely limited,
and not good for much... Booting, Chkdsk, and Nero5-(full version), IIRC...
(A basic data recovery setup that is for good working hardware...)

98 machines simply are not worth repairing these days with the low prices one can acquire a new system for. There was a thread about this on the HWG & an article on the NYTimes web site about disposable computers.

I have started giving people a hard time about carting off old WORKING Win98
machines, even for FREE...

OBTW in the WinNT/2k list there was a thread about how useless MSFT Antispyware beta is & that it actually let some spyware go undetected.

The next is technically cross-posting, so please forgive me... I put this next
part on
another list after someone gave unconditional praise for the MS Anti-spyware.
They even said to use it BY ITSELF!!!

*MS has changed what they call spyware and are leaving some of the "offenders"
in...
*Claria, 180Solutions, WhenU, New.net, eZula TopText, and Webhancer....
*
http://netrn.net/spywareblog/archives/2005/07/01/microsoft-antispyware-ignores-claria/

*They have changed the defaults to leave it... A user running the program in
*"brain dead fashion" and accepting the defaults will be leaving lots of stuff
*on their computer that lots of other spyware detectors suggest removing.

*The following explains it better than I ever could...
*Note: I think SunBelt originally sold the program to MS as some sort of a
*joint venture deal...

I'll bet "lots" of people that only get the free detectors will run them at
defaults,
in "brain dead mode"... ;-( (Let the flames begin... <grin>)
