Also, you missed an important point of this series of motherboards,
the nVidia SATAII connection.
Excellent point.
Yes, the SATA setup for a boot drive is somewhat problematic. I spent a
weekend trying to get the Sil drivers to work. Never did. IIRC, the best way
is to have nothing but the SATA boot drive(s) connected when you install
winxp. Again, IIRC, you do not need any driver disks to set up a NON-RAID
boot disk on the nVidia SATA.
I didn't have any problems setting up my SIL SATA Raid 0. Did you create
the SIL diskette from the Gigabyte CD first? When Xp 1st boots from the Cd
one must press F6 to use Scsi or Raid drivers or an ASR [auto system
recovery] & the installation only looks at a floppy disk for this which in
itself is a little weird that MSFT sticks with this outdated device.
I have not done anything with Windows XP 64, so I have no idea if the
drivers are included on the disk. If available, they should be available
from the Gigabyte web site. I didn't see any.
I downloaded drivers from Gigabyte for my GA-K8NSNXP-939 so I don't see why
they wouldn't have them for your board as well. I did go to the Silicon
Image website to download the Xp64 Raid drivers tho even tho they were
listed on the Gigabyte site. They're listed near the bios upgrades. Marc
can find Xp64 drivers at
<http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/Driver/Driver_GA-K8NXP-9.htm>
for the GA-K8NXP-9.
Jim there is Xp64 drivers at the Gigabyte site for your K8N Ultra 9 at
<http://www.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/Driver/Driver_GA-K8N%20Ultra-9.htm>
I paired my GA-K8N Ultra-9 with an AMD 64 3700+ San Diego core processor.
Couldn't be happier. Initially, I had some heat problems with this
combination, but they seemed to have disappeared after I replaced the
thermal pad that comes with the stock AMD heatsink/fan unit with some Artic
Silver 5.
I used Artic Silver 3 with mine since the HSF that I purchased didn't come
with a thermal pad & I've not had any problems with too much heat or rather
my computer hasn't had any problems. ;-)
