my dvd playback has gone blocky :(

this is with both dvd drives, 1 reader, 1 burner, both on the same ide
port. The only change I can think of is I updated my nvidia drivers to
latest, but rolling back to a previous version hasnt helped. I *DID*
have the same problem with mpg/avi's, but a reinstall of ffdshow fixed
that, leading me to think its a codec/driver issue with the dvd side of
things. Googling leads to a lot of suggestions about macrovision, but
nothing useful. Any ideas?
