Agreed, which brings up the obvious question, how exactly to secure said machines and networks. Being that I do consulting, I have to do this with a lot of varied clients. I used to used Symantec Client Security. With locked down antivirus and firewall policies, it makes for a pretty tight setup. However I've seen enough problems with Symantec products in general that I've started moving new clients away from Symantec stuff in general. I normally use Trend Micro's Client Server Messaging Suite for SMB which works pretty good, but it has no firewall component. Trend only seems to offer the firewall with their consumer suites. I've taken to outfitting laptops with Zone Alarm Security Suite, which even though it's pretty verbose (and irritating, especially with version 6), seems to work really well at keeping the laptops clean. The 3rd option I am currently investigating is the Fortigate line of products. They have a security appliance that offers, VPN, Antivirus, Antispam, IDS, and Web Content filtering at the gateway and their Forticlient which works in conjunction with the appliance to offer the same services to the desktop. It also does anti-malware like spyware in the most recent version of their client. The only problem I see with this approach is that the clients get their updates from the appliance itself, there are no other Fortinet based servers for updates which means, if your appliance is down and the user gets online after say a 2-3 week hiatus and starts checking email, there's a good chance they won't be protected from the latest and greatest threats. -- Harondel J.
