First experience: One of my clients who runs WinME (poor thing) has an HP
All-in-one device that she has had for about a year or so. Periodically,
the computer will start insisting on reinstalling the printer software every
time the computer boots. It had gotten to the point that she was just
leaving it on 24/7 to avoid the length slow down on start up.
This weekend it came to a head, and she asked me to troubleshoot it for her
AGAIN. In the past we uninstalled the drivers completely and then
reinstalled them and it would be OK for a couple of weeks or months and then
blow up again.
I used the chat tech support with HP, and the tech had me disable ALL the HP
items in msconfig. All of them!!! I asked him which I would have to
re-enable to be sure that the thing would scan, and he said that none of the
startup items were necessary to the functioning of the device. I did as
instructed, and the problem went away.
When we opened that utility that checks ink levels, the reinstall screen
popped up again. It didn't, however, put itself in the startup group, so
the problem appears to have been solved (however briefly). I decided to
post this to the group because I have seen this behavior on ME machines
running new HP printer/scanner/all-in-one devices before, and this is the
first time I have gotten any real help from tech support.
Second experience: Another client bought a new HP all-in-one (I'm hating
that term) and couldn't get the driver installed. A telephone tech person
from India (she told me where she was from while we were waiting for the 1
gig install to finish) told me to NOT plug in the USB cable when the install
screen instructed me to, instead to select "install without plugging in usb
cable" because the problem was a result of windows (XP) drivers in conflict
with the HP driver. It worked like a charm.
Just FYI. IMHO Hp has gotten their tech support together. It used to be
awful. All the usual disclaimers, I don't work for or sell blah, blah,
blah.
