Subject: Dual Router Networking
I have Verizon DSL & they provided me with this cheap Westell Versalink
Model 327w DSL modem & wireless router & 4 port switch all in one. I wanted
to disable the router & switch & bridge the thing to a Linksys WRT54g that
I had already from my cable days but the Westell POS won't run in bridge
mode at all. I've spent literally hours on the phone with VZ to which all
they can really say is to call Westell. Good luck as they have a answering
machine & they never return calls. The Westell wireless does support MAC
locking but does NOT support WPA. When I've used it's wireless I always had
what I considered suspicious traffic so I disabled it but am using the
router/switch part. I turned off DHCP on the WRT54g & plugged a line from
the Westell to the it from LAN port to LAN port & assigned the WRT an ip of
192.168.1.100 then configured the wireless with WPA-PSK & still locked it
to the MAC of my laptop's WNIC. Everything works fine.
But [there's always a but] to complicate matters I can only get 70KB
download from the Westell to my main machine with a wired NIC when it's
set at 100tx or auto but when I set the NIC to 10tx my download speed
jumps up to 120KB avg. Needless to say this cuts down on the speed of
transferring files across the LAN from machine to machine. I have a 5 port
switch & an extra NIC built into my main machine but none of my other
machines have an extra NIC so I don't see how I can boost my LAN
performance. I've tried the Westell to the other builtin NIC on my machine
& the results are almost identical & fwiw they both have the latest
drivers. A couple of the machines have firewire 400 but didn't want to
spend any more money on cables if I didn't have to. Yes, I've been to
Diane's favorite, Tom's Networking at <http://www.timhiggins.com/>
[What's up with tim vs tom?] & http://practicallynetworked.com/ but have
yet to find a workable solution.
Suggestions welcome. I wondered about instituting ICS thru my main machine
but that seems like such a shame especially when I have not 1 but 2
routers.
