Hi folks Found it was a faulty CD/DVD-RW drive as I said earlier but somehow - and I have no idea where or how as I had firewall and antivirus and antispywear running + hardware firewall in Router but.....
I had a nastie that had a timer running that froze the computer after ten mins then 8 then 7 then...... With a lot of rebooting during installs it finally got to me and didn't give me time to run regedt32 to stop the run command to find out what it was. Had similar before but this was awful. I had to install XP on an old 30Gb Hdd and then reformat the original C drive partition and start over. Don't say backups as I hadn't got that far but was in hand. I did have ERUNT installed but although it saves the registry it doesn't do anything to put it back so what's the use of it? And, sysrestore was pooped too.
