I did use gspot to test the file and it tells me
that it was correctly rendered but my problem is
still not resolved.
I have installed ogg and other codecs too but
WMP still cannot play it.
Divxplayer can play only a few seconds of the file
which probably means the file is somehow damaged.
I still cannot understand why WMP cannot play it at all.

Thank you Gene, I had forgotten the name of the program.
I used to have this program but lost it after my disk crash.

Google for Gspot. This will do what you want.

Subject: AVI file help needed

I have an avi file that would not play at all in WMP but plays only a
segment in DIVXPLAYER.
The file properties does not tell me which codec to use.

There used to be a program that will diagnose a media file and tell me if
the problem is with a codec.
Once I find the missing codec, I can download it from fourcc.

Any help with be appreciated.
