Now that's an interesting concept. I have the same problem but I know that it is my SETI client and I can exit the SETI program and everything returns to normal. I have no idea of how to cut down the CPU usage when it is running and no one on the SETI forum seems to know either. Never heard that about icons though. Thanks for the heads up.

I just had a similar problem with explorer.exe doing this and what I
found, sheerly by accident, was that I had too many icons on the
desktop.  I made a single folder for all the shorcuts, files and folders

and placed everything in it and now the problem is gone.  Such a simple
solution for such an annoying problem.
