If they had created c:\My Documents & had changed the paths for the various name spaces such as desktop, favorites & temps etc. XP still would create a c:\documents and settings\newuser folder unless the newuser acct was NOT created brand spanking new.

I agree that a c:\documents and settings\newuser folder would be created. However it was NOT. Which would normally mean the newuser account was NOT created brand spanking new, but is a RENAMED account.

So are the olduser's files in the newuser's folder after the renaming, editing or changing? ...

Nope... <VBG> the newusers files are in mixed in with the olduser files in the olduser folder.

... I'm surprised that MSFT allows user names to be renamed just to prevent situations such as this from arising. You'll notice that the only place that renaming of users is on a context menu is in lusrmgr.msc when one right clicks on a users name. Hmmm, that's interesting, so I'd say that MSFT really doesn't want the user names to be edited but YMMV.

Actually, depending on the logon method used, it's easy. Just go into the Control Panel and start the User Accounts applet. Then click on an account and one of the options is "Change my name". This actually changes the 'screen name' when using the Welcome Screen logon style, so folks believe they are logged on as the screen name (newuser) when they are actually logged on using olduser as the user name. The other way to change it is the way you describe, which will change the user name used in the classic logon screen. But either way, the folder remains the same: "c:\documents and settings\olduser". But yeah, I would have to agree, MSFT really doesn't want the user names to be edited. And I don't recommend it to our county offices, but do they listen? :)

Have you not experimented with renaming accounts? <VBG> I have plenty of practice because that's what some of our users do before we get there to properly transfer a system from one user to another. And they are left scratching their heads when they can't find where things are going. <VBG> So I had to experiment to see what was happening "behind the scenes". In a way I was surprised when a renamed account did *NOT* result in a renamed folder also.
