I don't think the question has enought info to give a "good" reply.
Note: This is a question with a built in "time bomb", and can't
be dealt with in e-mail since there are so many variables...

Which is the boot drive?
How did the "F" drive get that letter? ( special BIOS selection of
some sort, Old type "DOS partition letter assignment rules", or
XP-assigned?)

If "C" is the boot drive, should I assume programs were installed on "F"
instead of "C" by choice?

If "F" is the Boot drive, were any programs installed to "C"?

Is this a muti-boot system? (Or was it "ever")
Is XP an upgrade?

Can you make a clone of this drive (entire physical spindle) and work
out the details on that different drive, that you will then leave in?
(That is the ONLY way I would try something like this...)

WinXP may pitch a fit if you move partitions around too much,
(I would do that first on a different cloned drive),
and WPA (Windows Product Activation) has been known to
pitch a fit EVEN IF it was an OS type that did not even require Activation...

See the MS KB Article ID:223188 for the type of problems you might
run into... (This describes getting out of trouble, NOT how to change
a drive letter in advance...)

If the 80G is still empty, (no data), I would use the manufactures software
to copy the entire old drive to the new one (including all partitions),
and see what happened...
It may be "too late" to switch over to a more streamlined (and main stream)
"default type" of installation, AND keep everything working....

I have a harddisk partitioned C & F drive.

F drive is now 98% full whereas the C drive has capacity for the whole of
the F drive and will still have 10G free.
How can I transfer the program files on F to C in such a way as the registry
is updated?

It would take me ages to reinstall everything.

I have a new 80G drive ready to install, that I would like to become my new
C drive.
